I think a creature with built-in double strike isn't suited for common. If it were just the trick then that'd be okay, although putting a +1/+1 counter on it as well might make even that pushing the limits of common a bit.
...Ah, except IIRC you're designing for expert players, without NWO, right? In which case ignore what I said and this is great as it is. :)

There have been 2 common double strikers. Also the cost should be prohibitive enough. Okay to red flag or remove own double strike.
You can only play it before assigning damage.

I really like the mechanic at first glance. It may confuse people about blocker damage ordering though.
