Now with slightly less decisions. "Here friend, you can have this hostage, just let me beat those other guys' faces." is the theme for bartering in White.
For power? Not really that bad; either it's a bear; or you give an opponent a bear (or something even worse) in exchange for getting an artifact back to hand. Pretty minor really. And I don't see anything too terrible in letting a draft deck run 7 copies of it.
But complexity... it's a bit too fiddly for common; really. A few too many decisions to make; and quite a bit too much text to read.
It makes it a bit more strategic to play against, because you can remove the Hostage before combat damage. It's also slightly different from Regeneration in that you can remove the creature after blockers are declared to get rid of its "shield". But from a purely design standpoint, not really.
Can't have too many cantrips in this set.
This card is pretty much mandated to be in every other set, it's true. Also two reprints at in Common? Might replace one or the other at some point.
Maybe I should make this a keyword too. The only issue is that it'd probably go in R/W/B, which is already pretty overloaded in Keywords...
Reprint.

Might be too powerful for a common?

Easier condition. Now RW is Kingmaker/breaker
I had to make this pun. Maybe uncommon-worthy, we will see.
"cares about Standoffs" becomes "cares about having the lowest life total"
Does this really need to be a replacement, instead of an activated ability like on Fanatical Devotion or Vigilant Martyr?
Completely forgot cleric was the relevant creature type.
