This idea hit me, so I figured I'd share it. Kind of a coming and going sort of thing.
I know reducing the hand size has traditionally been a black mechanic, but it only popped up a couple times. And the more I think of it, the more it seems red to me. Telling people they got to cast their spells or they're going to lose them? Doesn't that sound like an impatient red wizard? Besides, black doesn't need an alternate way to discard. Might as well throw red the bone. The Gnat Miser ability would probably see print more often if it was in a color where it meant something.
i think you're right that reducing hand sizes fits red mechanically, but i don't know if it fits thematically. i always liked it in blue because the idea of blue magic messing with your mind is an entrenched one, and the hand represents the conscious mind. but i agree that it doesn't get enough play, and red has more scope for new stuff than any other colour, so if there's a way to justify it it's a good candidate for inclusion
i think i'd like this card more if there was something tying it more overtly to red and the idea of pain. maybe if you lost the ETB rider and made the mana ability remove counters only, and instead the enchantment gets a counter in your end step if a creature you control dealt damage to a player this turn?
