Once it becomes an equipment, either it stops being a creature and thus has no power or toughness, or it continues being a creature and can't be attached to anything. I also don't get why this is an instant. I'd figure it would be an aura to permanently change the creature.

It takes a lot fewer words as an instant than it would as an aura.
