My other idea for this card is to make it cost {b} and say "~this~ receives damage in the form of -1/-1 counters." Which version do you prefer?

Using -1/-1 counters is a lot cleaner implementation, though I might still leave it at {1}{b}.

Hmm. Lichenthrope, Phyrexian Hydra and Witherscale Wurm have played with this effect before. I think a 3/3 for {1}{b} is fine with that effect - perhaps make it 3/4.
