I think a Code Geass cardset should definitely include mecha somehow.

I'd be happy to just use one of the standard custom-cardset implementations of "mounts" or "vehicles", the ones you see in several different places. So options include:

  • A Mecha (or rather a Knightmare Frame, I guess) is an artifact creature, high stats low cost, that needs some other creature to pilot it (let it attack or block).
  • A Mecha is functionally like Equipment: it increases the stats of the piloting (equipped) creature. Not so keen on this for Code Geass though because in the series, when a mech gets destroyed the pilot often ejects and lives, where with Equipment it's the other way around.

Much though I love the Goblin Artisans' Tesla project, their implementation of mecha over there doesn't really fit with what Code Geass wants from mecha. Which is fine.

Vitenka recently reminded me of my vehicle implementation from the MDC. See Cannon Galleon. If you're looking for single-pilot mecha, though, I doubt that's what you want.

Yeah, I was thinking more like dude1818's Racecar or indeed Mecha Warrior.

I would be tempted to just make Mecha equipment with an equipment version of Totem Armor. Maybe "If equipped creature would be destroyed, instead unequip this and loses its equip ability until the beginning of your next end step."
EDIT: See Powered Armor for a very generic example.

More constraints from the series:

  • Some mecha are generic, like Sutherlands and Glasgows. They should clearly be common cards. They provide a clear boost to the soldiers using them, enough so that there's no way a soldier in one could be taken down by a (normal) human.
  • Some mecha are specific, like Kallen's Guren, Suzaku's Lancelot, Cornelia's, those owned by other Knights of the Round, etc. I don't think I particularly need to make them only pilotable by those specific characters - that's not a very Magic way of doing things - but I certainly want them to be more powerful than the commons, and ideally somehow synergise with the creature card for the pilot in most cases.

And I should say Powered Armor is very interesting and looks quite close to what I'm after.

Not that I'm happy with the restriction, but you'd think that "Creatures can only drive/equip one vehicle at a time" would make sense. I mean, wielding three Warhammers is one thing. But driving a racecar while wearing power armor is far too awesome.

Also, different type altogether? I don't watch Code Geas, so I don't know what's going on over there. But I'd assume that it would be anti-climatic if you could just Shatter a mecha.

Maybe artifact destruction should be specific in this set? Lots' of cards that read like Overload, or say 'non-Mecha artifact'?

As I said on the cardset comments, I've written in the past about how Code Geass is seventeen kinds of awesome. So if you have any tolerance for anime involving mecha, politics, supernatural powers and high-school students, I'd highly recommend you give it a try :) (If you don't have tolerance for that, that's fine!)

But yes, you're right, artifact destruction in the set might want to be pared down rather. Perhaps following the Heat Ray / Death Wind approach like Molder / Detonate did. I'm currently thinking that the set might want to have a higher than normal concentration of instants, to reflect battlefield tactics, secret plans, and thinking on your feet, and some amount of those will probably want to neutralise mecha somehow.

I created Glasgow RPI-11 as an example of how mecha in the Code Geass set might look.

Well, I guess I got yet another anime to catch up on. ;) But, you know, after I finish Kill la Kill. The 2009 season of The Melancholy of Haruhi will need to stay on the shelf for a little longer...
