Blue isn't the most obvious colour in Code Geass, but there are plenty of people seeking knowledge. Some of the students, most obviously Nina. Some of the engineers, most blatantly Lloyd. Probably a lot of the Geass Institute.

Still, I'll want to be keeping an eye out for more that blue can do.

With the two successful design challenges providing a bunch of ideas for Britannian W/B mechanics and Black Knight R(/g) mechanics, and green looking like it'll represent the Japanese and Chinese traditionalists, blue is the colour in the set that's still looking for a role. My current thinking is:

  • I'd like to follow Development's current approach of giving each of the ten colour pairs something different to do in limited.
  • I think the role blue is currently looking likely to play is that it represents the R&D groups of both Britannia and the Black Knights. There's not really anything distinguishing Lloyd and Cécile's group from Rakshata's that I can see.
  • So I'm thinking you could build a Britannian deck in pure black / pure white / black-white, and those could work; or you could build the version with more R&D support in black-blue / white-blue / WUB. Similarly with the Black Knights in R / G / RG without research or RU / GU / RGU with.
  • I haven't yet established precisely what "R&D support" looks like mechanically. I'm thinking one recurring theme will be smoothing for artifacts - a Vedalken Engineer reprint, a Faerie Mechanist-style effect, kind of thing. Given the way mecha are currently looking like they'll be coloured artifacts, that seems a fertile area.
  • Another mechanical theme can be drawing cards. The Black Knights in particular I'd think could have a number of looting effects (such as the currently proposed Prepare for Infiltration).
  • I could also see blue providing support for the instants/combat tricks theme with things like Lunar Mystic, and I'm happy to have a number of instants / sorceries / enchantments in blue that do usual blue things like grant hexproof, counter spells, grant flying etc. I don't think I'll be short of blue noncreature spells.
  • I might be a bit short of consistent, on-theme blue creatures though. It doesn't help that while R&D (well, technological advancement) is a big theme in the series, the only researchers we actually see are Lloyd, Cécile and Rakshata (apart from the nameless, ill-fated researchers in the Geass Institute).
