I don't like cards like this which pull you in two separate directions. On the one hand, its PT suggest it should be attacking, but the activated ability suggests you should hold it back. When you add in the "artifact card" clause I think that results in too much complexity for common. MOON-E mentioned being wary of the complexity creep of the spellslingers at common; perhaps if you kept the common ones to the "simple" spellshaper template, then perhaps added a cycle of the "If an artifact card was discarded..." ones at uncommon. Also, suit the PT to the ability. If it must be attacking, you could always give it vigilance.

Vigilance doesn't really make sense on a red card, but I can see what you mean about the P/T thing.

As for spellslingers, consolidating the artifact bonuses to uncommon or higher makes a lot of sense, though it would come at a huge cost for the set mechanically and flavorfully. It's something to think about.
