Perhaps might read simpler as "Whenever a card is put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield"?

It's worth noting that Vulturous Zombie is a damn strong card. It does include the battleifeld, so that's a release valve... but that card barely cares about the battlefield anyway. A single Tome Scour makes either of these cards go nuts. It's probably fine here, but I'd have a hard time imagining this as a keyword mechanic on 5+ creatures in one set.

Oh... looking at this again, actually, it's not as bad as I (and jmg) thought. A single Tome Scour will actually only put one +1/+1 counter on this, because amuseum's wording says "one or more cards". (And therefore my suggestion should be read as saying "one or more cards" as well.)

this is not as ridiculous the zombie. for flavor and for power reasons, i don't want this to affect cards from the battlefield or spells resolving normally. thus with a lower power level, it can be used on more cards and be cheaper. you can play it like quirion dryad, put one on the table and then play your usual black and blue spells. or you can have an army of them. that's the point of keyword, an army of unusual black and blue dudes (nontokenly). this creature is still decent on its own, but much better in a black and blue aggro-control or control deck.
