This creature dies when it comes into play. Probably meant to have the separate line "~ comes into play with X +1/+1 counters on it" or something.

Back to 0/0 with templating that allows it to live.

The timing of the ETB trigger is going to confuse players. Like if they put a -1/-1 counter on their own Baleful Strix, can they then choose it to return to their hand? (The answer is no, but it's confusing).
