Could be a whole cycle here. Some sorcery effect that happens on ETB. The bigger the spell the more counters it gets. Your opponent can remove counters by playing the game. You get to rebuy the card when the counters are gone.
But is Unsummon X too strong? Or too weak? Could this have flash?
I certainly like the idea behind it. A cycle could be interestering
The counter removal could alternately just be an upkeep trigger.
Could be but that is inevitable. Neither player has any choice in the matter which could make the card better or worse (depending on whether the opponent is likely to remove the counters at a rate faster than one per turn). Either way, it's definitely less interesting that way
