"Takes damage" doesn't really make much difference, given that the tokens have 1 toughness anyway. Might I suggest:
...you may put X 1/1 red Goblin Illusion creature tokens onto the battlefield with first strike and "Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."

Now that I'm looking at it, this is kind of blue (illusionist)/white (tokens). What so you think? Also, this is pretty powerful, rare wouldn't be too much, would it? You'd basically have to run Wrath of God to get rid of him all by turn...7? 8? Actually might not be that broken; more a beatstick than anything else, broken up into little pieces. Still might be rare, but not as bad as I thought it was.
The illusion ability is rather blue. So this would probably work better as a blue card, yes.
There are some powerful uncommon token-makers. Look at Summon the School, Firecat Blitz, Goblin Offensive, or Warbreak Trumpeter. Remember a simple Tremor or Pyroclasm can answer this as well.
