  ­Time Stop got used as a 6-mana counterspell sometimes; and Draining Whelk is a 6-mana counterspell that rewards you for using it on a big thing and that saw tournament play.

  Not really; the original intention was "Counter target spell, unless you pay its mana cost too; in which case, go for it, cast that spell."

  For Challenge # 038. For the record:

• ­: Counter target spell unless your opponent pays .
• ­ and pay 2 life: Counter target spell unless your opponent pays .
• ­ and pay 4 life: Counter target spell unless your opponent pays .

  That is, of course, assuming you haven't found a way to add a payment of life to your spells as a part of their cost.
