I made Meager Minds of Mortals.
Created for Challenge # 043. I figure if a Spike knows their opponent's deck and a good Spike knows their opponent's play style, then a great Spike knows their opponent's every move.
Spikes like to win by outsmarting their opponents. This allows them to use their being a step ahead to completely shut their opponent out of the game, and it even includes a wincon of its own.
I made Void of Awakening and Aeonian Gates.
For Challenge # 043.
For Challenge # 043, but I don't think it's really a success. I based it on the idea that Spike likes Debtor's Knell, but I think this wound up being more Timmy/Johnny.
SUPER PERSIST. I like it.
wow, that's really awesome
made it a 6/4 for now
Made for Challenge # 043. It might look underpowered by the raw stats, but I think Spike will see this as "super value dragon", and try to see how many different ways he can sacrifice this, blink it, and trade with it to get value. Might also be able to have firebreathing on it and/or an additional point of power or so and not be overpowered, but I've learned from the Persist mechanic that these cards are often much better than they look, and this has "super-Persist".
Yeah. With first strike I can trade with it if I have two 6/6s and a 1/1, or eight 1/1s, or three 4/4s. (Or for that matter three 1/4s.)
Yeah, well you could block with like a Sun Titan and a Lingering Souls token, let's say, but if you have that then I'll probably just nuke your titan with the ETB ability and hit you for 6. It's a tough card to deal with, but then again it's a 7-drop, so it probably should be :) I could see it with or without the first strike, I'm sure that's something we'd test in development before going to print.
Thanks for the props guys, keeps me wanting to think up more designs for us to enjoy :) You guys are all stand up designers too, and I like a lot of the work on this site, so getting positive feedback from you means a lot to me.
Huh. You know, I think you're right: this is a Timmy/Johnny/Spike card. Impressive.
What it most reminds me of is "Ach! Hans, Run!". But without the exile-at-EOT clause.
Ooh, nice. Reminds me of Bogardan Hellkite, which was played in tournaments at its time (and hard-cast sometimes, not just summoned off Dragonstorm... which is incidentally another Spike/Timmy card).
It'll be a heck of a tricky card to deal with except with removal spells. Any burn will do it, but the opponent would need two first strike blockers to even trade with it (after the first one gets burned away). Which I guess is the kind of deal Spike wants.
added first strike
Reminds me of Hibernation's End, but better.
@Jack & Link: Thanks! :) Hopefully I can come up with more cool cards that do that in the future.
Woah. This would be really fun to play. Actually, I think this card might even be good for Timmy, Johnny, AND Spike, which is impressive.
I feel like reanimation targets are a cheap way to solve this, which is why I specifically listed Karn Liberated and Cruel Ultimatum as examples. Big creatures aren't off limits, though!
It feels to me like a reanimation target doesn't really count - what's the point in a mana cost if Spike just bypasses it entirely? But a ramp target does count. In a sense it doesn't matter very much what the giant fatty to ramp to is, and they tend to be fairly Timmy cards. So making a ramp target that's specifically Spikey, rather than just a random Timmy card that Spike happens to use at the top end of his ramp deck, is a fun challenge.
I guess Sphinx of Uthuun would probably count, what with Fact or Fiction being one of the most iconically Spike cards ever.
(Hm, is Iona, Shield of Emeria a Spike card or a Griefer Timmy one?)
Niiice.
Made for Challenge # 043. The idea was to have a big brother to Arc Runner as a good finisher for a Big Red kind of deck. Spike would appreciate its flexibility as both a bigger Flametongue Kavu, as well as just a 12-to-the-dome kind of big finisher that red is typically looking for. It might be able to have first strike too, not sure.
Yeah, "when enters the battlefield and at the beginning of your upkeep" is a good way to do it. In fact, the limiting factor on this is how many giant fatties Spike is happy to play in addition to this (but could pair it with morph creatures or similar).
Come to think of it, I was considering a splashy planeswalker for 7-cost, and this might work very well as a planeswalker, if it can search up any green creature card for a -2 ability or similar.
Actually, maybe 8CC is a better place for this card, 7 may be too good
