The last ability seems somewhat bizarrely worded. I assume it wants to be something like:
> Whenever ~ deals damage, put that many cards from the top of your library into your graveyard.
You know, I was going to say there has never been anything printed that's that good, but Mass Calcify is pretty damn close, and less situational than my card. Of course, I don't think this card here can be printed at 6. Ah well. Doomed to reject rare box.
Yeah, this is "Whoever that guy is that plays Warp World hoping to hit Grip of Chaos", not Timmy.
Now, if it at least let YOU tutor... maybe. Even then, like my entry, it's probably too late.
Timmy turns cards sideways, rolls them up into a tube, and beats his opponent about the head with it.
This does seem like an overcosted combat trick that's not usually going to be enough better than "destroy 2 attacking creatures" or "deal 1 to every attacking creature" to make up for the "Have to survive to 8 mana" problem.
For this cost, I'd expect "destroy all of target opponents creatures"... and still would think it too hard to get good use from.
So tempted to say Bronze Horse. Wonderful comments there ;)
11/inf trample. With a drawback that's secretly an advantage?
It costs 8, and ends games in... umn, yeah, ok, it might end them in 1, probably in 2, possible never. So to use this I'd really want to be making use of that 'drawback' - but I can't do that without more turns. Though, I gues sI've proved I've got 8 mana, so just a bunch of flashback stuff might be enough.
Yeah, ok, I'd try it.
If the card seems weak, just increase the power until it's strong enough. I forgot about Avacyn. You're right... this should be bigger. Edited.
This is true, and I can't argue with your logic. I do think that there is the occasional unusual deck that can benefit from this, however. For examaple a standard White Weenie deck with lots of Knights and equipment might do well in the early game, but have to turtle up in a fight against a mid-range Green-Black rock deck. Wouldn't it be cool to knock that deck out in one punch when they cast Overrun and swing all-in?
Or, maybe, I'm thinking of Timmy again...
Spike isn't usually too big on combat tricks, although this is quite the trick. The main problem being that a card this expensive is typically going to be too late against the decks it would be best against (lots of little beaters). Spike's reasoning would go, "A control deck is the type of deck that would most want this type of card, but if you're a control deck, why aren't you just playing Day of Judgment instead?"
Hmm, seems a bit high in CC to have as an uncommon to me, unless the set is Rise of the Eldrazi, hehe. As for the card, it seems ok, but maybe a bit weak for Spike's taste. Reminds me of Avacyn, Angel of Hope but weaker, and Spike doesn't even like that card much.
For Challenge # 043. I don't know if Spike would really pack it, honestly. It's kind of high up there for creature removal. That being said: That's very potentially a one-sided better than Wrath. How could that not be a good thing?
Added Maddening Hellion. Pretended it was Uncommon material.
Oh, also, Foolproof Strategum. Though, admittedly, that card's probably as Timmy as it is Spike.
For Challenge # 043. Oh, look, it's a drawback that one can work around. Why didn't we mention this idea up front? Admittedly, it's a bit harder to make a card with a casting cost 7+ have a drawback and still be appealing, though. I had to drop indestructibility on this thing to make it reasonable.
Well, to be fair, this is as many Fountain of Youth activations as you want each turn. It's also got the "mild advantage over time for the amount I pay attention to this card in my hand" as well as, "I must always make decisions as to whether or not the thing I want to do right now is better than gaining 1 or 2 life", which is something that only Spike is interested in thinking about. A card doesn't need to be powerful for Spike to like it... though, that sure does help.
It got a little wordy, but I did some research on templating for counters and it looks like it would have to be worded something like this. Bleh, not as clean as I would like, but still a printable amount of text for a Rare, I guess.
trying to clear up the text about the -1/-1 counters
changed it from counting -1/-1 counters to checking toughness

Hmm, the problem I see Spike having with this card is that it doesn't have any immediate impact on the board. Spikes usually are looking for any expensive card they play to be able to dig themselves out of lost games. For example, you could put a 7-mana curse into play that says, "Enchanted player doesn't draw cards." Now yes, that's a pretty strong effect over a long game, but there are still some games where that won't help you because they already have a bunch of guys in play. For 7 mana, Spike wants something that has the potential of turning entire games around, like Karn Liberated or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. The other issue I see is, this card is usually going to be a net -benefit- towards the opponent against most smart opponents. They will play the whole mind game of "Well, my opponent thinks I will go searching for this card, so I'll get this one that's almost as good instead. But, he's probably going to think I'm going to think of that, so maybe I'll get this third card that is probably about as good, too." It's a fun mind game, but let's face it -- the majority of the time, they'll get to tutor for something decent and probability says you are more likely to guess wrong than you are to guess right, especially if you don't know the exact contents of their deck. Most Spikes will realize this, and then realize the card wasn't designed for them to use.
Hmm, I think a 7-mana gold enchantment with no immediate effect itself might be a bit on the expensive side for Spike. It is, however, a pretty strong effect once it gets going.
I think it's a little bit too expensive for the effect. 13 mana to get the first benefit of it, given the cost of Tooth and Nail by comparison. Granted, it's infinitely repeatable over enough turns, but Spike is all about "What am I getting upfront with this card?" He envisions playing this for
, only to have it Crushed or Shattered and being down a ton of tempo. Also, the 4-different-colored-mana activation cost looks a little more like the kind of cost a casual card might have than a Spikey card.
One of probably very few artifacts that can eat both halves of an Ancient Grudge and keep on tickin'! :D Keep those Revoke Existences away tho, please!
