Velfen Hopeful with Compete
Myriad Betrothed with marriage-rage ability represented by Soulbound.
See Challenge # 157.
I realised myriad marriage-rage thing was basically "soulbond with more attacking-y rewards" :)
See Challenge # 157.
I looked for another interpretation of Velfens competing for status, and considered something quite straight-forward. I wasn't sure which way round to do it: if it rewards you for having more, it's a bit win-more. If it rewards you for having less, it's an incentive to not play cards.
It may also be too fiddly to keep counting. I also considered something like, counting mana costs but that was even more arithmetic.
Myriad Raider attacking under cover of a storm.
See Challenge # 157.
Maybe too close to prowess, although good they go together well. Tried a different, more direct, way of focussing on "attack under cover of a storm".
I considered slightly more fiddly implementations, eg. that you can cast after blockers to make it effectively unblocked, so there's some bluff potential, but couldn't find a way to make it work. (Any suggestions? I think it might be more interesting if you didn't always need to blow your spells in advance.)
Archipelago Explorer, with Blue Supplicant, the first mechanic I thought of that captured the feel of seeking out the incarnations.
See Challenge # 157.
I liked the flavour of the inhabitants appealing to the incarnations, but couldn't think of anything like devotion which captured that feel. This is the first mechanic I managed to think of.
I realised it was possible because a lot of the flavour was over pilgrimages and seeking of the incarnations, not only worshipping. And that this let me use the same mechanic in multiple colours, but without depending on a specific incarnation card.
I don't think it quite works, but it captures something of the idea. It's too fiddly to need search cards as well as this and as incarnations. But at least, the incarnations only need to exist.
Good point. I forgot circle of flame. Apparently this could be a lot stronger. (Or maybe, needs some way to damage the opponent if they don't attack?)
But I think it may still be difficult to make several spellstorm cards like this and have them mostly be useful without being overpowering.
I assumed it was a keyword action. But I didn't stop to think if keyword actions could have numbers or not :)
This is a lot like Circle of Flame, so I don't think you need to worry about it being overpowered.
I like this!
I do think it would be unlikely to come with a number, though. Then it could be a keyword action: "Return target creature to its owner's hand, then explore."
Huh, I made a mechanic similar to this once in a challenge on another site. I like iteration better.
See Challenge # 157.
Explore, a seafarer mechanic in U and maybe G. It looks like a land mechanic but really it's scry.
Explore 2 would read "(Look at the top 2 cards of your library. You may reveal any number of land cards from among them and put them into your hand. Put the rest back in any order.)"
Mass Conversion a Zhir mechanic in U (and maybe W)
ETA: And Castaway with Explore, a Seafarer mechanic in U and maybe G.
See Challenge # 157.
I wanted something that captured the coerced conversion aspect of Zhir, but ended up with a blue mechanic for a more white flavour.
I tried several names until I found one that could semi-justify milling the cards, in order to make the templating easier (as compared to putting the unused cards back, or on the bottom).
It sounds subversive to get the cards from your opponent, and is somewhat complicated because you don't know quite what you're getting and it might be strong. But having to pay the mana cost makes this more-or-less a weaker version of "draw a card" which hopefully helps balance it?
Ineriande Treeweaver with forest sanctuary
Voltaic Storm like terrains
See Challenge # 157.
Intended to be a bit like terrains: the equivalent of a defender creature but in enchantment form.
Not sure how these should be balanced; not dying to attacking creatures is quite strong, but OTOH, it's something like a 1/1 indestructible which isn't especially overpowering.
See Challenge # 157.
I kept trying to find something capturing the refuge flavour of Ineriande forests.
I was thinking about the idea of presences that turn into creatures. I decided to try out the idea as the incarnation cycle.
Acceptance 157, Power, Passion, Penance, and Discovery.
As a bonus, I made a typical incarnation for goblins: Perseverance 157

Passion was the hardest for me to translate to onto a card. I'm not happy with how this came out.
