After The Mending, the plane of Dominaria fell dormant. Countless centuries of chaos had scarred the plane almost beyond recognition and its few remaining inhabitants either sought to rebuild what had been lost, or retreated into hiding.

New Benalia eked out a subsistence existence, its citizens desperately turning to religion in an attempt to understand their suffering. Soon they formed the Parish of Serra, and the Word filled them with hope for the future. They sent an expedition of missionaries, settlers & priests to scout for new lands, looking to find similar pockets of civilisation to join their cause.

Meanwhile on Otaria, the Krosan Forest had begun to grow once again. Originally a vast, verdant, almost fearsome entity in its own right, the Forest had been mostly obliterated by The Mending. But the concentration of mana within the Forest had remained, and as that mana spread through the soil trees, shrubs & greenery returned to the landscape. Krosan druids - whose population had whittled down to nearly nothing in the aftermath - suddenly found themselves enjoying fruits their forebears had enjoyed too, and with that came an explosion in the druid population.

Dwarven scouts returned to the foothills with news of the returning Forest, and with that the dwarves slowly left their underground shelters and returned to the light of day.

The Benalish expedition saw Otaria from a great distance due to the impressive size of the Forest, and were amazed by it. They'd never seen something so alive before! Quickly they sailed to shore and before long there was a small Benalish settlement on Otaria. Missionaries had begun the job of spreading the Word, and some druids & dwarves found solace in it.

As this was taking place, undersea Cephalid colonies were also returning to civilisation at a much faster rate. The discovery of the ruins of the Riptide project had accelerated Cephalid knowledge significantly after a period of primitiveness, and before long a new Riptide laboratory had been built.

This laboratory was different though. The Mending had not been kind to the Cephalids; in order to survive they had been forced to fend for themselves, and in many cases had to resort to cannibalism to survive. The contemporary Cephalid was a self-interested being, co-operating with others only insofar as it helped them. This co-operation gave them the laboratory, but it also gave it a new, more sinister purpose. This time, the Riptide project was to extract the magical energy inherent in every living being, and consume it themselves.
