Janky combo pieces are one thing. But that loss of life means that only the Johnniest of Johnnies will be able to appreciate the card. The card's tough enough to find a way to abuse... I don't think it needs to kill you by default as well.
Or just make the card slightly stronger by saying "X or less". A cost of is pretty ugly - ISTR hearing that Unwilling Recruit came from design costing , and they changed it to because looks confusing.
Magic normally says "X or less" or "X or more". Changing that might lead to people confusing what this does. (People don't read what they already know.) I'd suggest making it one cost more and changing to "X or less".
At the very least "You may, if you do" it.
But it is a valid combo piece - black loves "Target opponent sacrifices" style effects.
Picture yourself facing an enemy Ghave, Guru of Spores with this on your side.

Bad in which way? I created this as a janky combo piece.
I don't know how much this should cost, but I agree that it should be just
and
's.
Very bad compared to Spreading Seas. If this is to be used on opponents' lands, I'd rather have Spreading Seas; if it's to be used on my own lands I'd rather have Trace of Abundance (or Spreading Seas).

Wow, and I thought Carnival of Souls was bad enough.
Darkthicket Wolf was my dawg in an AVC/AVc/INN draft I did once.
