It was originally called "Aping Ape" to get across the copy-cat feel, but I changed it just to capture the flavor a little more. This probably would not be the final name.
Apes are probably a good idea for emulate, but it's hard not to imagine a caged ape not having defender. Heck, I'd expect it to not be able to block, either, if it is Arrested. Shackles might get him to block again, but he'd still feel like an Ogre Sentry.
Shall I suggest changing the name to 'Cagey Ape'. It's got a similar feel, but lets the monkey walk around.
Vitenka got it. Every color gets at least one common emulate card, I was at a loss for what to make green's so I went with the pun "monkey see monkey do". Then later I decided that the flavor of a caged animal who mimics observers at a sort of zoo or circus would fit well with the flavor of the future, where there isn't a lot of natural wild life running around.
Definitely agree. Could perhaps make it gain ", : etc"?
Darksteel Relic was at least uncommon. This perhaps should be as well. (It could probably cost , assuming your costings of Emulate creatures are accurate.)
It's a monkey, sat behind bars, amusingly mimicking the faces people pull and the gestures they make.
whats the flavour here? Seems very odd
not sure if I'm such a fan of this not being able to do anything by itself. Then again Darksteel Relic is a thing.
With Emulate this is going to be an amazing and brutal common that can often clear the enemy board for a single mana. Consider changing.
I was saying it should be one or the other, not both. Either increase the price so it can be a common without warping the format OR make it a good build around uncommon at its current cost.
It's true, this card plays very differently between limited and constructed. The main reason why Keep Watch was never that great a card in constructed, for example, was because any player who controlled three attacking creatures probably already won the game.
But an ability with the potential to explode in block due to inter-block synergies? Yeah, sounds like an uncommon.
That said, I question the wisdom of arguing "Oh, it's not normally a great ability, but it will be awesome in this set. That's why it needs to cost more than it normally would." I would think that that would be the exact reason why you'd want to cost the card as efficiently as possible - as a way to stress the positives of the block, as opposed to protecting the rest of Magic from a linear mechanic.
That would be like overcharging for all the flickering effects in Avacyn Restored because the set is really strong with flicker. The end result would have been annoying, and full of mixed messages about what sort of deck players are expected to play.
Normal I would agree but attacking is a far stricter requirement than tapping in this environment due to Emulate and the large amount of activated abilities. that can then be copied to all your other creatures. Maybe keep the current cost and change to uncommon. Often this is going to be equal to either a Concentrate or a Opportunity which is insane for a common.
Not sure I agree. It sure is powerful, but it can only be abused by way of a tapper. Otherwise it simply acts as a deterrent. I would probably have test this card before determining if it were too powerful.
This will almost universally be less powerful than Keep Watch (a card that never seemed to fill its destiny as 'bonkers'.) I assume that means this card could cost without ruffling too many feathers.
consider adding an additional U to the cost to make this less splashable and less powerful. Or make it uncommon
either reduce the damage or make this an uncommon, far too powerful at the moment.
you seem to have a lot of 1 mana Emulate cards.
good reprint, have you considered any pithing needle variants?
