Random set brainstorms:
—The ten countries are obviously faction-like. I should probably base the set around them as factions, like Ravnica and its guilds. However, I intend to follow the paradigm of having two sets per block, so I think I'd just put all ten countries in the first set... though that seems like a lot, and then what would the second set be about?
—I'll probably abandon the tri-color countries. I don't like them or their designs very much.
— Should each country have a unique mechanic? How should I differentiate them from the Guilds?
—There's going to be a Defender theme. I don't see the Countries working well in limited without plenty of defensive creatures.
—The Law ability is difficult to find a place for at common. Very difficult. It might have to appear at uncommon and above. I know this goes against certain design maxims, but why would Nobles be common anyway, right?
fair enough, just something to keep in mind when testing. assuming nothing breaks I tend to err on the side of aesthetics.
I would be worried about power level. Countries do have a lot of drawbacks, but they are dual lands that come into play untapped at no immediate cost.
fair enough, I think that's a good attitude to have
That's something playtesting well help decide.
I am.
Thank you, kind sir or madame.
I start lots of sets when I have the idea, but then I lose focus our get busy with other things. I keep meaning to move the "against the law" cards into this set and then forgetting.
