Wedge of Alara tapped tri-lands.
I wanted a Tithe effect. Then it became a mirrored throwback to Smallpox. I forgot about the discard, but it doesn't matter since white doesn't draw cards. And it's fine for the cost, which you agree as well.
The key difference between Orim's Chant and Time Walk is that the opponent still gets to draw their card and play their land. So you're getting card disadvantage, and nowhere near as much tempo advantage as a true timewalk. Once you factor in the two mana to cast your spell (or three in this case), it's fine.
(Orim's Chant does in fact turn out to be broken, but not for the reason you think; instead because it can be put on an Isochron Scepter.)
Isn't judge/Orims effectively Timewalk in white, and not significantly upcosted? Youch!
I always did like the Kirin ability to kill numbered stuff; seeing it in black as a one-off makes sense. It's kinda very very good though because it's only affecting one player. maybe to address the power concern it should be "all players"?
But yow, Orims just sems incredibly broken to me.
Just wanted to say this cardset looks fascinating. I'm very interested to see where you take the alliance between and the alliance between , and the conflicts between them.
Pity that the names need to be this way around for the colours to be consistently ordered.
I like the names and their ties to the effect. A sorcery-speed Orim's Chant is fine. A one-sided Void is pretty strong, but the play is interesting enough that I'm fine with it.
I can't help feeling that on each of these three split cards, the black half is much better than the white half. (The black half is removal in 2 cases, whereas the white halves only approach card advantage if a 1/1 flyer and a Plains counts.)
Introvert is Mindculling in the correct colour; makes sense.
Extrovert... I don't get. Is it meant to be a bunch of minor effects to evoke a kind of bubbly, unfocused frothiness? The power level seems fine, I just don't get the flavour.
Wow. Befoul was a top-notch common; this card is strictly better in two ways, and looks like a windmill slam first pick. The flexibility of having an average evasion spell as an alternative is okay, but adding instant speed is huge. I fear this should probably go up to 5 mana (where it'd still be eminently playable; cf Cruel Revival, which only got back a Zombie about 10% of the times it was cast).
Ooh, good point, Alex. Maybe this should just have something like "Can't be blocked except by black creatures"... or just artifact creatures... or whatever else amuseum thinks is appropriate...
A 4/4 for 5 unblockable is good. Equipping it is pretty damn good too. It sure isn't Batterskull... but I don't know how fair it is to compare anything to one of the best pieces of equipment ever made. (If I was to rank them, I'd say number one would be Skullclamp, number 2 would be Umezawa's Jitte and I'd probably put Batterskull as 3... assuming I'm not forgetting anything). Oh, hey, that last paragraph looks like I'm arguing the power level on this card isn't spot on. It looks good to me... I just type too much some times.
I do agree that not everything has to be overpowered, and the 1 mana discount can make a huge difference. That doesn't stop the difference being perceived as superfluous. As far as I'm concerned, when something looks superfluous, then it is superfluous, since perception has a much higher value in design than reality. If a player, however, realizes that there's quite a bit of added value in what they once thought was superfluous... then that is an excellent design dynamic. Personally, though, I don't think this is that... though I'm quite sure a number of people would disagree with me.
I fear intimidate is a very bad choice for living weapon, especially one without reminder text. How many people really think of the 0/0 living weapon Germ tokens as colourless? How many people would guess that a black creature could block this?
Oh, I love it. I always wished the Tainted Field cycle had extended to other basic land types too. Makes great sense (along with the Tainted Field reprint) in this set.
Reprint from Ravnica.
Reprint from Torment.
A 4/4 unblockable for 5 is pretty gosh darn good.
originally there was only one equip cost, the hybrid one. the colorless cost is merely ceremonial for other colors. not everything has to be overpowered. this is already on the level of batterskull. that 1 mana discount could make a huge different.
Actually, my first thought was "Gee... the difference in cost between and isn't that great... especially when you consider the caster already paid to get this out, so you know he/she has it."
The two-brid mana equip cost does, at least, have the benefit of being a real discount, as opposed to using-a-coupon-to-get-3%-off discount.
I like how these equipment have different equip costs, but have you considered using two-brid mana? For example, this could be .
Edit: Looking at it, that may actually be silly. Different costs may be the way to go. Also easier to balance that way.
