Did you make this "mana value X" rather than "mana value X or less" on purpose?
It's a general set-theme support. Monuments are colorless and come every color other than green, and Memento Mori appears in every color other than red. This was also a fill-in for an artifact slot since I'm terrible with colorless artifact designs.
I was inspired by Unclaimed Territory which I thought was common, but confused its rarity with Path of Ancestry.
This doesn't sit well with me at common. I feel, common lands should be universally usable and not restricted to a theme (other than by color e. g. for dual lands).
A land that helps out mana fixing for an archetype should be at uncommon, the rarity also used for archetype signpost cards, or rare if it's predominantly meant for Constructed.
added "activate the ability of a monument"
Originally was going to have a mana value of 5, but pushed to six since five felt too cheap for potentially seven damage to a player.
Missed the part about graveyard
I considered 3 mana, but I was worried the ability might have been too good at that cost. If such is not the case, I would decrease mana value and p/t accordingly.
This design wasn't made primarily for the Desert archetype, but for the -1/-1 archetype (though the uncommon Desert cycles gives them overlap). The Desert addition was added as a set-relevant bonus. Either way, the general idea was that you'd have more lands in your hand than you could play in a turn, so that you could ramp.
Weird at four mana. How is the Desert archetype suposed to play out? Keep lands in hand rather than playing them?
Geothermal Pool sounded too UR, so the name was changed, but unfortunately is hyper-generic
I really wanted to go full-weeb and name this Desert Burial
Laborer replaced with Artist
