Nice! Very sensible common serpent with a set-specific "do this" hint to make it able to attack.
I think it might be a bit clearer to say "Whenever you tap an artifact for mana". There's plenty of precedent for "Whenever you tap a land for mana" and Kinnan says "Whenever you tap a nonland permanent for mana".
That seems like a really good combo piece, and particularly gross with tokens
Oh yeah, Squirrel Nest and a sac outlet
Unsure between the current cmc of 3, or just at 2 of
.
I really hate that "mana pool" has been obsoleted. That makes this much harder.
Added in "you control" to the second ability. Reduced the -2/-2 to -1/-1
I wasn't going the lord route until Yajar. I think limiting this to only casting creatures revealed on top as if they have flash would make this less crazy.
Red got the worst of it. I think white was a better card overall pre-lifelink lord. I will workshop red at least later, since I never liked much to begin with.
This card seems so much better than the rest of its cycle. Except perhaps Yajar, Death Tracker which is a big pile of card advantage when you use it to wipe the board of weenies, and then its activated ability is card-neutral assuming you use it to counter removal spells or keep stuff from dying in combat. By contrast, Nokoli, Summer's Advent and Aqak, Of the Verdant Winds just affect life totals. Maatuni, Gild-Eater does give card advantage, but only by repeatedly destroying enchantments/artifacts. But this is... better than the card advantage engine that is Future Sight for nonland cards. (Red and white getting the bad entries in a cycle is a familiar pattern, but not one we really want to encourage...)
And actually I was wrong on Aqak, Of the Verdant Winds, this isn't a flash lord - it's fine being the only flash card in your deck. I think I misread "as if they had flash" as "as long as they have flash".
This card is undeniably fun. It's got quite a black feel to it with the "sacrifice one of you minions to keep my other minions alive" feeling. I like flying lords, and almost every "flying tribal" card so far has been white, blue or both. Yet there are plenty of flying creatures in black, so I think it's a great idea to encourage you to build a flying deck with black in it.
The global -2/-2 effect I'm not sure counts as fun. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is a brutal effect on mana dorks and utility creatures, and I always groan when I see her hit the table (second only to Sheoldred). But, eh, it's a rare black win condition. It at least encourages interesting deckbuilding: better to use Gilded Goose than Paradise Druid, and suchlike.
I'll just note that the mechanics of the final effect are quite old-school, as in, it makes your opponents' fliers indestructible as well. I think it would be fine to only protect your own.
Was "Whenever you cast a spell, gain five life and tap up to one target creature." Changed ability to be a lifelink lord to fit the cycle. Subsequently adjusted name and flavor text to fit the new theme.
Hmm. So Kemahi, of Supersonic Flight is a flash lord (and a nice one); Yajar, Death Tracker is a flying lord; Nokoli, Summer's Advent is a first strike lord; Maatuni, Gild-Eater is a hexproof lord; but this isn't a lifelink lord. It feels to me like this is more of the combo-breaker than Maatuni, Gild-Eater.
Wheee! I think that does work. That's awesome. Classic high-risk high-reward black.
In EDH this would probably lead to groans because the Consume Spirit/Drain Life plays are a bit too good. But outside formats with those, this looks like a great black mythic.
Play Design would need to keep an eye on what poly-activated abilities exist in the environment. Something like Jousting Dummy is fine, Slimefoot, the Stowaway is on the border, but Crawling Barrens or Diviner's Wand could be problematic.
"an amount of
"?
Why "each Tectonic Collision"?
I'm not even sure if the second ability works.
C-c-c-c-combo breaker!
In my notes for fauna I had a note listing a few different birds. I thought making a cycle of them would be neat. I wasn't ready to break pie, but luckily not all birds, even mythical ones, fly. For this bird specifically, I was inspired by the Alicanto.
