This would be a lot of work, but I can definitely see the benefits.

See devise and OAuth (in particular devise :oauthable)

OAuth painful to implement unless you're fitting precisely into the structure they expect.

In addition, federated identity is not something I like. Two thumbs down from me.

I like OpenID myself, and have my own OpenID server to authenticate too. (However, I do not implement OpenID Connect.) Don't require certain providers such as Google or whatever only, though; allow people to use their own. The existing username/password login should still be provided as an option though. Another option that I think would be useful is some way to be able to use the curl command to do logins, to automate such features as imports and exports, without needing to open the web browser in order to do so.
