I thought 'dying if hit' would suit well the black part of Durell's tripartite nature, letting me put the other two parts on a body that would be undercosted without that disadvantage.

You seem to have kept the black and white parts of the charm, but your comment suggests you think you've kept the blue and white parts. Also, I think the tap ability would be pleeenty good enough if it just gave -2/-2 UEOT like the source material.

Um... Let me rethink this. A lot. ( was: When damage is dealt to Durell, Son of Dromar, destroy it. ­{t}:Put a two -1/-1 counters on target creature. If you do, gain 5 life. )

I reallly don't think I should be allowed to have {t}:Counter target spell and target creature gains -2/-2 UEOT, though it's a nice built-in sometimes-a-cost.
