You should always say "to its owner's hand" anyway. No matter who controls it, it may have a different owner thanks to Bazaar Trader, Zedruu the Greathearted, or any one of many other effects.

My proposed wording: "Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a creature or player, you may return target nonland permanent controlled by that player or that creature's controller to its owner's hand".
