Of course; when there are 6 or more +1/+1 counters on, you don't care allll that much about the red ability.
Nice though; this does seem to capture lung pretty nicely; both mechanically and personality-colour-identity.
And I love the trinket-text typeline. Miiight be even nicer for him to only gain the dragon-ness when he hits his threshold?
I think that adding in text to gain the type only when there's enough counteers would give the card too much text. It's pretty crowded as it is.
As for the red ability, I considered a few things for that -- either lowering the amount of counters, making it give trample as well as +2/+0 (Discarded for not quite fitting with the character), or making it be +3/+0 for and having the counters reduce ability costs by . Eventually I decided to just play it safe and be conservative about it.
