I'm know large pages (eg. Multiverse Design Challenge cardlist page) may be too big to load, and all pages are slow sometimes, but it seems some individual challenges show in preview but their page just always fails to load ("Application Error") and there's no reason which is obvious to me why those pages are larger. The art challenges may have images, but I don't know if the counterspell one does.

Yes, I have also been experiencing this issue.

I've made a bunch of improvements to the way Multiverse handles database access for cards with long discussion threads. I think (hope) this should no longer be an issue. The challenges you mention will still take quite a while to load, but now they ought to fit into the 30 seconds Heroku gives me before bombing out to an Application Error.
