As discussed on Fleetfoot Ninja.

The channel mode here is pretty bad. This would be a lot better as a first striker that channelled for first strike, but:

  • I'm currently trying to avoid going so close to Shinen of Stars' Light
  • The set risks having a lot of first-strike combat tricks as it is
  • The idea of this cycle was to make decent creatures with a not-particularly-good alternate combat-trick mode; first strike is a very good combat trick!

At first I had this as a 3/3 for {3}{w}. Took it down to this size to try to make the channel a little better, because then you aren't giving up such a valuable resource by channelling this. Not sure if I've just made the card unplayable as a result.

I do like the flavour that the student doesn't necessarily have to actually be out on the battlefield, which would be a bit odd; it's just that one of the soldiers on the battlefield has met the student, been inspired by her, and can channel her compassion when needed.

A third option for white would be some kind of damage prevention.

One possibility here: rather than a 2/1 with lifelink and channel-lifelink, instead make this a 1/1, with "when ~ attacks, gets +1/+0", and channel - +1/+0 and lifelink. (Or +1/+1 like Benalish Veteran.) That'd sync it up with Belligerent Brawler and Furious Rebel as well. The blue and black channelers (Fleetfoot Ninja and Persistent Sergeant) are still useful without power pump.

It's adding more words at common, which I don't really like, but it allows this to serve as a halfway meaningful combat trick. Moment of Heroism was perfectly playable, but I think "{w}, Instant, target gains lifelink" is horribly unplayable. Trying to find a middle ground.

(Edit much later: Eh, I think this is fine as is. It's mostly a Child of Night, but occasionally you'll draw it late game and get to use it on a big thing, or you can actually gain a little life as a trick so what the opponent thought was a lethal swing isn't. Options are still very useful even if they're narrow.)
