Possible alternate text: "Whenever an opponent searches a hidden zone for a card with certain characteristics and fails to find that card, you may search that zone for a card with the same characteristics and exile it. You may play that card as long as it remains exiled."
I'm not sure there's a way to word this without making it sound like it belongs in an Un-set.

Do players OFTEN choose to fail to find? Seems incredibly niche.

It's incredibly narrow, I know. It's tech against Gifts Ungiven, I suppose.

It only works against Gifts if they find 0 cards with it, which isn't something you play that card to do.

One particularly tricky use case for this card is that if you play a creatureless deck, and get the opponent to play Bribery on you, you get to strike back by stripping EVERY creature card from their deck, and if you ever get the mana to play them, well...good for you.

Other than that possibility (where they have no chance to find anything, while you get an opportunity to search something else that does have matching cards), most of the card text is blank for the same reason that "Whenever an opponent targets this, get four Dragon tokens and take an extra turn" is blank.

It could, in theory, work for cards that have yet to be printed. For example, if this card existed:

Castin da spells
{5}{u}
Sorcery
Each player searches their library for an Instant or Sorcery card, exiles it, then casts it, targeting themselves if able. Those players shuffle their library.

Well, then, I'd have a very legitimate reason to fail to find my Wit's End wouldn't I?

Go ahead and find your Wit's End, but don't bother tapping the lands that actually allow you to pay for it. You'll find yourself quite unable to play Wit's End, even in the unlikely event that it is the only instant or sorcery in the deck, but you still found it in the search, so it just stays in exile.

I think jmg's point stands if we tweak the details of his made-up six-mana sorcery to cast the spells without paying their mana costs.

I didn't realize this was going to cause quite such a conversation.
