Thanks, Link. You reminded me that I have to add flavor to these things. Added flavor to this one.
I like the idea behind this cycle quite a bit.
Last of the Replica cycle, this time using Copperhorn Scout. Really have no idea what to do with the base stats... I need a 4-cost, but you don't really want to sacrifice solid creatures, vulnerable creatures or defensive creatures to this effect. You want to toss a small creature... or maybe something that can't block or something.
Hmm... running the numbers, it looks like main sets normally have two cards with reach, while expansions normally have only one. Okay. Reach creature it is. Maybe a 3/2 so some players can scratch their heads. I got a 2/5 spider at common, so I don't want it in a similar groove.
Bumped to uncommon, and added +1/+1. I also cheated by adding another uncommon slot to all the uncommons. There are too many cycles in this set, but I don't want to pull any of them.
Ok. Bloodshot it is.
Gee, there's a lot of red creatures that deal damage. Outside of monkeying with artifacts, there were only two other real choices. Vulshok Replica, and this:
Wardriver Replica

, Sacrifice ~: Attacking creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.
Artifact Creature - Warrior
3/2
I'm not really sure which is better. Here's one more bonus for the Wardriver: There aren't any replica warriors yet. Sylvok Replica and Goblin Replica have the Spikeshot creatures covered. (Well, except for Bloodshot Trainee. I suppose I could just relabel this card as 'Bloodshot Replica'...
Now removes types as well. That should prevent at least one argument in my lifetime.
Fair enough. I don't know if I buy the argument completely, but I'm guessing that most Magic players would agree with you, and not me, so why not make those people happy?
The only other alternative was to keep spelled-out-shroud, but have it be able to target your opponents stuff as well. I figured that was too tricksy, though, for a common that most people will barely read.
I think it's pretty clear that hexproof is precisely the modern design equivalent of shroud, in the same way that deathtouch is the modern design equivalent of the Thicket Basilisk ability and infect is the modern design equivalent of the Swamp Mosquito ability. All of them work moderately differently to the old version, but close enough that it's not worth having something close to the keyword but not exactly it.
So I think it'd be absolutely fair for a modern throwback to Mirrodin to include a reference to Advanced Hoverguard that granted hexproof, in the same way that, say, Ulvenwald Tracker (a throwback to Tracker) uses "fight" even though that's technically different to what Tracker does, or in the same way that Gaze of Justice exiles even though Hand of Justice destroyed. The only reason I can see not to refer to hexproof is if you dislike hexproof and are trying to avoid using it in your set.
UEOT, target creature gains hexproof, and all players are its opponents.
I don't want anything granting 'shroud'. It's about as relevant a keyword as Islandhome right now. Hoverguard never granted Hexproof, so it seems innapropriate... though I'd be more open to that idea.
Some of that fiddly wording, however, was me just writing the ability the wrong way. Corrected that.
Why the fiddly wording rather than just "gains shroud"/"gains hexproof"?
It's a pretty expensive recurring lock, so its probably fine. Besides... You could just activate the rat, then return it to play. You aren't doing it during your opponent's draw step, but if your opponent can't play that spell, its the same effect.
Though, I must admit I find it odd that I've never heard of attaching Chittering Rats to the Aluren/Cavern Harpy deck. Seems legit.
