It's all in aid of his "Playing records on the moon" project; which we should fully support.
Anyway; I like this one. It's not a bad size penalty; and it's at least "Skip your next draw". Although it's better than chittering rats later on in the game, since it's an instant speed trigger rather than an ETB creature. Maybe it should at least be summoning sick prone, to stop a recurring lock?
Added flavor. Thank you Thendrix for making everything worse for everybody.
Part of the replica cycle. This one is based off of Chittering Rats. I'll have to confront why someone would bother to make this replica in the first place when I come back to fill in the flavor text. Also, I really wanted to make a Chimney Imp homage, but I got enough small flyers kicking around, thought it would be silly if it was a huge flyer, and really needed to fill in converted mana cost 3 anyway. The only other real choice for this spot was Blistergrub (Mirrodin sure has a lot of zombies...), which would have been a fine card, but maybe a bit too close to source. I think I like this one better anyway.
Oh, there was one other spicy card I could have made:
Disciple Replica
, Sacrifice ~: Until end of turn, whenever an artifact is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, target opponent loses one life.
Artifact Creature - Cleric
1/1
As I said before, though, this isn't really an artifact set, so a Disciple of the Vault homage would be inappropriate. The replica's a funny card, though. There's an argument that could be made that the replica would have been more powerful than the Disciple back when affinity was at its heyday... what with it being a 1-cost artifact and all.
Was 1/3, but I had to admit to myself that this card could, in theory, be better than Squadron Hawk (okay, you needed to be playing the right colors. But +0/+2 is a decent trade for flying.) Changed to 0/4, so that they could just represent a pile of walls. I might have to switch this to 0/3 later (or 1/2), but I sure hope I don't.
Good points, all. Switched a few casting costs to homage the drone correctly. 2/2 flying for 4 isn't exciting, but it passes the 'would you play with it in limited' test for me. I had to dump the flavor text, but I only found it amusing, not important. Besides, this is a common, and that wasn't the best way to introduce Atticus to new players.
Shuffling around to make room.
On the other hand, I don't like Neurok Familiar-Replica; you have the freedom to activate it whenever you want (as opposed to it being a bonus when you play the card on-curve) - but you don't know when you should!
Granting shroud from an on-board sac effect may in turn play a little bit too close to the original blue replica Wizard Replica ;) But I do like the way that a "Hoverguard Replica" would "guard" a target creature by granting it shroud.
I was wondering about that. I think if you played with the two cards, they would feel very different... but I don't know if that matters. Even in real Magic, there's a good chance that people wouldn't play with both of those cards regularly... just compare how similar they look.
Two other alternatives are Neurok Familiar (sac for what would normally be a come into play ability) and Advanced Hoverguard (sac for shroud). The familiar is a bit too 'linear artifacts' for my tastes in this set, though. Shroud is shroud. I have no real opinions either way on that.
Is this too close to Neurok Replica? The size is very different, which is good, and this casts Rescue rather than Unsummon, but I wonder if it'd still be too confusingly similar.
I didn't say at the time, but I absolutely love your comment about the person most prone to discovering new species.
switching some cards around to fill casting cost gaps. This one is now a 4/3 for 5... which is a bit odd for

or

to pull off. I'm going to assume that the weirdness is fine for a sacrifice of power next to Mass of Ghouls (or Water Elemental, I guess). Does it bother anyone else?
Oh, and the reason I bumped this up, is because I wanted the new (((Vedalken Replica))) to cost
.
Continuing the Replica cycle. I thought about using Neurok Invisimancer or a re-tooled Lumengrid Augur, but when I thought of Vedalken Mastermind, and how much it would tick off Atticus, I couldn't really help myself.
Switched to 4cc, and bumped to Uncommon.
Nice. Nice callbacks to Mirrodin, the flavour works (assuming you have some flavour text explaining it), and looks like they should do precisely what you say in Limited.
