Mageta's Charm
For Challenge # 081. I liked Jolrael's Charm and figured I'd round out the cycle. Hey, ho, Mageta.
I'm pretty sure that if I didn't mention it first, someone else is bound to tell me that Innocent Blood is black. And it is. Though, I'm not really sure why. It's kind of like a mini-Balance. Doesn't white get Balance effects?
I added it anyway because I like how the 'sac a non-Legendary creature' feels like Mageta's ability. It's probably too cheap... but sacrificing a land in the early game to stop a 1/1 from hitting you is a terrible idea. And later in the game, when you have enough lands in play, you're likely to 3-for-1 yourself just to get rid of... a 1/1.
Returning an artifact was added because I like the symmetry of "sacrifice one thing, get one thing back". It couldn't be a straight up artifact, though. Mageta hands out swords in Mageta's Boon.
I want at least one of the abilities on each of these cards to point at your land being sacrificed. Originally, I planned for that last ability to gain life, but I couldn't get over how much better than a certain 5 casting cost common green sorcery who's name escapes me right now. Preventing a perfect amount of damage is a lot more situational, though, so I figured that would work.
But if the creature has a Treacherous Link, that'd give the player a poison counter!
...Oh, okay, never mind.
Funny thing is that Lifelink might be a better keyword than Wither on this card. There's probably more scenarios where 1 life saves you the game, than scenarios where a -1/-1 counter would save the game and a deathtouch wouldn't.
Also this also makes me wonder why this card doesn't have infect, since there are blue cards with infect and blue cards that give poison counters directly, but none that grant wither, awkward as that is.
As always, I'm happy to share for the love of terrible ideas. ;)
Yeah, I kinda ran out of fun things to put on. I did initially try it in green as trample, deathtouch and, um, uh... which is why I switched :)
I agree, this didn't really work out the way I'd hoped.
Ah, nice idea. I like to see keywords used on unusual card types :)
It bothers me that wither and deathtouch are properties of the card, but proliferate is an instruction to the player to do something as part of an ability. I think it would work as written, but I'd be happier if we could think of three abilities that were one or the other.
ROFL! Yes, that's probably about right.
Oh, you silly people. You successfully tempted me to make a charm costing
, and Omnipotence Charm is the result.
Bah. Designed for Challenge # 081 specifically because somebody pointed out Multiverse supports the
symbol. But then it turns out Multiverse doesn't actually support that symbol in mana costs.
A ton of scary effects have been printed since Gleemax, with mana costs rather less than it. Primal Surge, Enter the Infinite, Omniscience, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Obviously no spell can actually be worth
, but I tried to guess three effects that would cost more than any of those.
The first mode is Primal Surge without the deckbuilding constraint. The second is Spawnsire of Ulamog's last ability without the Eldrazi constraint. The third was just a fun ability that continued the pattern.
Heh. Took me a while to figure out what you were going for, but it's rather fun.
Black does get to proliferate (Spread the Sickness), so it'd be okay in monoblack. It's unfortunate that one mode is Scar while another mode is Murder, though: I can't really see many times you'd want to choose Scar.
Heh, nice.
Well, it's only half of the warcraft effect (I was pleased to have an opportunity to use it), but you may still be right. All the abilities would work well as a sorcery, but I realised I was making too many sorcery charms, and may have overcompensated.
I am glad to have finally written a spell ending "And how!" :)
Heh. Yes, I guess green doesn't have very many mechanics that aren't shared with either black or white!
This is a pretty awesomely terrifying card. I think it should be sorcery or 5 mana (probably the latter given the Master Warcraft effect).
I also considered a

charm including an "N damage, gain N life" effect, and similarly couldn't find the other mirrored effects :)
I'd prefer to not see two modes mention Eldrazi explicitly. I think either the second or the third mode could just say "colourless [creature]" instead. I don't think a colourless Seething Song for artifacts is too good (it's good, certainly, but Thran Dynamo is normally a lot better).
A very flavourful and sensible card, though.
Doh, the very first one! I saw it, thought it was good, but then forgot and missed it when I skimmed the comments. Oops :)
Maybe. Did you see Jolrael's Charm?
For Challenge # 081 annoyingly, I couldn't think of a good third black option, so had to bring in blue.
Challenge met, lovely terse effects on: Victory Charm somewhat cheatingly, Tim's Charm attempts this direction too.
Alex meanwhile made Omnipotence Charm.
Somewhat 'un' charm, for Challenge # 081
