Oh, also another cool thing about Widgets is that they never say their name in the card text, because they could be attached to a non-widget. This gives me the freedom to give them god-awful ridiculouly long names, because I know that no matter how much I edit them, they won't end up with those names in their text. This one may have been overkill, but it describes the artifact too well...
Yeah... the point to get people to feel clever when they realized that a charge counter per turn on some artifacts is much, much better than half a 1/1. I also made sure there were two common charge counter artifacts in set Green Mana Battery and Arcane Spyglass. I guess its rare for a reason... it doesn't hurt that the rare Widgets don't have reminder text.
But, I got to admit, the idea behind Widgets is fun, but the design space is rather limited. I pretty much stuck every idea I could come up with that would be an upgrade to most artifacts. After the 8-10 I found, you'd be hard pressed to get many more original ones out there. Modular seems funny, if that was in my block...
I'm glad this comes off as fun, and not wordy. Especially the lone common Widget. This was originally my stab at "Assembling a Contraption", but it fell apart when I took another look at the rigger and found the text asked for "When a Rigger assembles a contraption". Still, I think it's better this way, divorced from contraptions. The flavor comes out much better when you think of these as a bunch of spare machine parts/add-ons.
I would be honored.
Mmm... and that does bug me. I think I made Twiggy before they printed the Propagator. I wonder if he should be a 3/3 for 4, or if I should stop worrying about it.
I really like this version of 'filter to colorless' as you put it, and hope Wizards figures it out someday. I especially like the fact that too many of these in your deck give people a desire to play spells that cost
as opposed to

, which, most of the time, is irrelevant. I had a cycle of these in Uncommon in my Core Set as well, and they all had minor, no mana activated secondary abilities. For example, the white one had
: Return target creature you control to its owner's hand. Use this ability only when you could play a sorcery.
Hellbent is kind of the point, since its a major mechanic in my block. I was trying to design a 'fixed' Gustha's Scepter, which is considerably better... but it's funny because removing the card now looks like a drawback. Still, as a way to get a boost of
in three turns it still seems potent, but maybe not fun...
Ignorant Bliss is already in the Core Set. I had multiple people request that card as soon as I mentioned the set would have Hellbent. :)
I think I missed this first time round. I love it. :) Force of Nature may be somewhat outclassed power-wise these days, but flavour-wise it's still fantastic. And anything that can make multiple 8/8s deserves to be mythic. (See Godsire and Liege of the Tangle.)
Hm. So it's like a storage land or mana battery, but you have to invest one card per mana you store in it? I don't think I like it. Except perhaps if I'm playing a Hellbent deck, like the kind that might like Ignorant Bliss.
The self-animation effect is fun. But what I'm most interested in here is the mana ability. It's a fascinating take on "slightly-worse-than-a-Plains", specifically because you managed to make it not ETBT or change life totals. "Filter-to-colourless" is an ability I've only seen before on Apprentice Wizard, but it very much makes sense here.
It definitely is somewhat worse than a Plains, but not very much. I think this cycle of lands are fine because the self-animation is quite difficult to achieve, but the mana drawback might not be enough for many other cycles of nonbasics.
Nonetheless, excellent idea, and I may borrow it at some point :)
Curiously, this doesn't really benefit from being attached as much as most of your Widgets do. This one only helps if it's going on an artifact with another way to gain and/or spend charge counters.
G'beh. Infinite combo-a-rama. Could this at least have the "not less than (1)" text as on Training Grounds / Heartstone?
Heee! Fun mechanic!
That is a fantastic name. May I take some inspiration from it for my steampunk set Clockwork Wings? :)
Reminiscent of Myr Propagator.
