Intriguing card. Good ability, good rarity, good stats. Often you'd rather have Auramancer, particularly if you don't have the mana to cast both this and the dead Aura in the same turn, but this has more Johnny potential, especially with sacrificable auras like Floating Shield. I like it.
I was just saying that you COULD boost it and it'd probably be OK, not that you SHOULD boost it. I like the call out to the Bats (and by default the newer Phyrexian Battleflies)
True, but then it wouldn't be an obvious variation on the bats. :P
Still, I don't think this is that far from power level... it just exists in a different deck. While this won't be as powerful as the bats on offense, on defense, 2/1 First Strikers are very strong, so the card is probably best suited for a player who was planning on casting larger late game spells. I like it, and I'd play with it despite the power level, and that's a good indication that it shouldn't be made any more powerful. After all, I'm not trying to impress people, I'm trying to make a draftable expansion.
Interesting variation on Vampire Bats as First Strike isn't quite as powerful as Flying you could possibly get away with this being either a 1/1 or a 0/2.
Also, I'm pleased to see that you assume that this is a cycle. I only have it on two cards right now, since I am strapped for space at common, but its clear that this type of aura could be on, like, 15 cards.
My original idea was to have this replace the cards like Vigilance, Lifelink, Primal Frenzy and Reflexes. A simple card for the new players that older players don't laugh at them for picking up. Admittedly, none of those cards were any good, except for very corner case draft needs, and only if your deck really, really needed the 7/7 to have Trample.
I'd argue about power-levels here, but it seems to me that this card is a good idea that can be made even simpler by decreasing the cost by
and removing the +0/+1, and I'd rather get people in my play group to talk about this mechanic rather than pan it. Will it always be good when you play it? Probably not. But it can sometimes swing a game hard, and at
, you can cycle right past it, so it does what a good cantrip should do.
Not as good as Storm Crow.
Hmm... That's a very good eye you have there, Alex. I don't know. It's quite possible that the Oracle wording is just old. They made rulings on cards a long time ago based upon what they felt should happen as opposed to what the card actually said. See also: Flying Carpet and Flash. I get the impression that someone at wizards noticed that if you have two of these guys in play, and there was another creature with First Strike in play for one turn, and was destroyed, then both Escaped Shapeshifters would continue to have First Strike because they saw each other.
Is this a problem? I can see why it could get confusing on a shapeshifter that may or may not have up to 9 seperate abilities. But if both Fainthearted Drakes have Flying, it should be relatively easy to remember that, and seems a little funny... but it could be confusing, and would probably happen often at common. I'm switching it over, but I don't really know which way is 'better'.
Heh. That is kind of funny. But I don't think I could do that at uncommon, and I only have so many rare slots. I'll have to keep it in mind for the third expansion. I've been thinking of using another Decree on another Rare, so I'll have to use the cantrip versions in the future.
I bumped it into rare due to too many Uncommons. I was hoping that the idea of a Spellshaper that "cheated" may be rareable... but I guess not. I could change the spell being cast from Inspiration to Divination, but I don't like how power-warpingly good that is.
Looks like I'm bumping a different card.
Also, I like Survivor and played with him in a number of decks, but he's one confusing commons. Besides, I don't think I've ever gotten more than +2 card advantage off of him. Better to compare to Jushi Apprentice which got considerable play.
I like it for its effect on Limited, which is what half the cards at common are meant for anyway. I can see this card pass late (assuming there are no new players to Magic at the table), then ending up in the hands of a player who decides that maybe they can play a G/W deck with a lot of mana ramp. Sounds like a fun goal, and, again, isn't much more spectacular than a G/W ramp deck that makes giant Green creatures instead.
This is one of the cards I'm interested in seeing how it performs in a real draft. I'll keep an eye on it when we draft 20XD6...
Wow. A 9-mana common. I guess the idea is that if green can have giant common fatties, it's fair for the other colours to get it occasionally. Reminiscent of Primoc Escapee, but rather worse.
Makes a lot more sense once you've seen the set has things like Draco Maleficus :) But even then, I wouldn't really play this in any normal deck. Would be much more playable if it had something like cycling, even cycling
.
Interesting cycle. Presumably this template is so that you still draw the card if the target is removed in response.
I think this particular card is still underpowered. I'd normally rather have Scavenged Weaponry, and nobody remembers that card. Either knock it down to 2 mana, or bump it up to +1/+1 or +1/+2.
Hm, a Skyscribing saboteur trigger. Similar to Lore Broker, I guess, which is presumably the inspiration for the name.
