A Prediction

Magic in its current iteration cannot last forever. The policy of pumping out set after set, block after block will exhaust the possible combination of unique card names, creature types, and mechanics. In other words, WotC will eventually run out of ways to reinvent the wheel. Assuming this to be true, it would be in WotC's interest to create an a collection some the cards that best signify Magic. This was the initial idea behind core sets - that over time they would have a "core" set of cards for the game.

This is an attempt to do just that. To capture what Magic is, was, could have been, and will be. Cards from throughout Magic's history will be present, in addition to some newly created ones especially for this set, and those elsewhere on the Magic Multiverse site.

Theme & Flavor

Emphasis is given to colors and lands, as both of these are the foundation of Magic. New and old mechanics will be returning, some in droves, others with a single representative. Creatures and spells that need tuning or tweaking will be adjusted. The merit of cards to be included is based on flavor in a relative vacuum. A player shouldn't have to know the details of a particular world in order to make sense of the card. The art, the name, the flavor text, the color, the power and toughness, and the abilities, should all speak volumes. The cards that are truly timeless are those general enough that a player can build their own story and world around. Flavor trumps everything.

Lands are important, especially basics. I'm also including a lot of Aura's that effect lands. Landwalk abilities and color protection will be making an appearance. Many cards will care about colors in some form or another. Of all the creature types appearing, white will be getting some new ones it hasn't had before. Most creatures will also be 'real world' creatures, i.e. Grizzly Bears and Electric Eel with some magic influence.
