Mechanics | Skeleton | Archetypes | Flavor | 1st Playtest | 2nd Playtest | 3rd Playtest |
An update on the work I did here:
http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/node/12670
I'm trying to address some of these issues that were raised there (such as the lack of clear archetypes).
You can check the following pages for some more info: Mechanics, Flavor, Archetypes
I'll be dropping the Lord and Minion types so that
Token creatures -> "Minions"
Legendary creatures -> "Lords"
The flavor still translates pretty well and this makes them more manageable from the archetype perspective.
I've been thinking about the mechanic distribution between the colors and such. Here's the current plan I ended up with which will require lots of small tweaks:
MAJOR THEMES (use the main mechanics)
chant — order, harmony
proclaim — fated, prophecy
distinguished — glory
rebels — inviduality
MINOR themes
— hierarchy (tokens/minions)
— harmony (lifegain)
— manipulation (False Counsel, Silences Yet Unmoved, Bitter Cold, Contaminated Ground)
— creativity (instant/sorcery) ... maybe "mulching"?
— corruption, lineage (delirium/threshold) ???
— creation (ramp)
Doing some overhaul...
Tokens ("minions")
Chant
Distinguished ("lords")
Proclaim
Uprise rebels
I'll be untying archetypes from keywords in the future so that the keywords will be used much more loosely between the colors. This means that the colors will all probably have some chant, distinguished, and proclaim cards...
Reading your basic Montain it occured to me that the reminder text is ill-advised. With the current wording of "Unused mana is lost." without any mention of a timing new players are more likely to use mana incorrectly than with no reminder text at all.
I suggest you either leave off the reminder text or specify a timing: "... is lost as the phase ends."
I remember you noting on this before. I still think that having "some idea" is better than "no idea / purely making a guess" on how the basics work. The incorrect plays you refer to only apply to scenarios where mana is "left over" - those do not occur that frequently. Also, in this particular set, uprise is there to suggest that mana does not immediately dissipate.
If I went with "as the phase ends", wouldn't I also have to mention "and/or step"?
Hey, I've begun to upload the set to CubeTutor. You can check it out:

EDIT: Full set is uploaded, should be draftable now. Versions of the cards are a bit outdated from what is on here though, so keep that in mind. @Tahazzar, let me know when you've got new card images for me to replace the old ones.
Where are you getting all of this artwork? Kudos to the effort you've put into this!
Artstation, deviantart, pinterest, and the like. There's a lot of Silmarillion fan art floating around - and thanks.
I'm going to declare this to now be the version 1.0. It's considered 'finished' (development is halted) until otherwise stated. Some minor fixes might still get done, but I'm not expecting major overhauls.
@Mal:
If you're still interested and have enough spare time, I updated the google drive gallery:

Cool, I'll get this uploaded sometime this week.
Updated and done.
Direct link to draft the set here.
This is great! Thx.
I made this nonsense deck out of my first test draft: http://www.cubetutor.com/cubedeck/905362
My first pick was Silmarils, Jewels of Fëanor, which is fitting :P
Post your comments on Silmarillion: The War of the Jewels here!
If your comments are on a small number of specific cards, they may be better added to those cards. This is for comments on the set as a whole.
