So.. you get to declare a subset of blockers before they declare attackers; and if you do, those blockers get a bonus?

Fiddly is the problem. This messes with the established flow of the turn. It's easy to miss engage on an opponent's creature and declare attackers too early.

I call that this will cause misplays.

Interestingly this is not supposed to be a triggered ability... Why?

Not triggered ability for the same reasons as Adanto Vanguard: trigger reduction, and there is still plenty of time to answer it before the effect actually becomes relevant.
