I was going to post exactly this, so I'm just bumping because it had no response before.
I've thought about this too, for the record.
It's a capability that has some risk to it: some of the internet's nastier denizens may be more nasty or abusive in private messages than posted out in public for all to see. But yes, this does seem a very reasonable request. It won't be in the next release, but I'll bump it up the priority list.
I think that allowing you to write on your user page can be helpful, in case you want to mention different communications, e.g. email (for private messages), NNTP (for public messages), etc. This is possible in a card set page already, but not in the user page.
