It's cool when a card is okay by itself but has extra synergy. The only problem with this mechanic is that it they get rid of this, you both still have to keep track of the irrelevant fate counter in case you draw another one and it becomes irrelevant again. This is very frustrating and brain-consuming.
Maybe if you turn around the mechanic and have the ability affect itself (so that it would still have synergy with others but wouldn't require anyone to keep track of it if it was gone). Although that would just make a tribal-y card.
This mechanic idea was part of a subtheme (fate counters) suggested for Suvnica that almost certainly will not remain. At least 2 other guilds (Zhavi and Cisme or Aynsele) were going to use these counters, as well as other cards (e.g. the fates supercycle).
