Attempt at making an uncommmon cycle, with Selene's Blessed, Quicksilver Weaver, this, Frenzied Painter, and Seedmind Caller.
This is very confusing, especially for an uncommon, but what can black do in this cycle? I'm not very happy with Frenzied Painter, either, to be honest. I considered having this turn things into 2/2 black Zombies. Whatever it does, it will probably diverge too much from the rest of the cycle for me to be happy with it.
I played a little with a similar ability in Sienira's Facets on Reality Sculptor. It plays great (if the players understand it), but it's pretty white or blue as it functions somewhat similarly to Minister of Impediments. I do love the effect but it's pretty powerful, and probably too cheap on this.
I had a similar quandary to you in a cycle in Sienira's Facets as well, the Concealers. In this case it looks like I left it at just three... I did play around with a blue and black one with a variation on the ability, saying "~ becomes an instant / sorcery card. Activate this ability only if ~ is in your graveyard." After a little playtesting I think that just turned out to be too confusing and parasitic / useless though.
So, um, I don't have much to suggest except that this may indeed be doomed to be an incomplete cycle!
Yeah, there's just not a card type that black really cares about, and there aren't enough permanent types to make a whole cycle. I can't really turn things into planeswalkers.
Zen follow-up question: "If a permanent has no types, is it still a permanent?"
Yeah, it is, and it's possible to create a typeless permanent with existing cards: March of the Machines and Neurok Transmuter.
