Steal a creature and then destroy it? Ouchie. Normally you need to do at least a bit of work to find a sac outlet for that. I guess the price bump makes it ok?

In comparison, Murder costs {1}{b}{b}. This is a more sure way to destroy a creature, since Kiara's Beguiling will smack a Wall of Bone off the table, while Murder will not. I'm guessing that if you designed a card which said "Target player sacifices target creature" that the cost would be {3}{b}... and that doesn't even throw Act of Treason into the mix... or deal with the fact that red rarely kills creatures.

Saying "Red rarely kills creatures" is a bit disingenuous. I mean, sure, technically it's the fire red creates doing the killing, but... Come on, direct damage is red's thing!

I suppose the reasoning is "If I can Act of Treason I can usually kill it off anyway, let's make it a sure thing for one more."

I was more referencing red cards that actually kill, like Fissure. But, yeah, I'm aware that few things can survive a Shivan Meteor. It's probably worth noting that somethings can, like Dawn Elemental, but they're few and far between.

This does bypass both "Indestructible" and "{?}:Regenerate" - which is definitely something red usually doesn't.

Interestingly, in my brother's notes he had that this was inspired by Act of Treason and the Ball Lightning/Spark Elemental type of red creatures
Basically that the creature is beguiled by her flames which suffuse it and empower it - untapping it and giving it haste but also burning it out (hence the sac). He originally had it costed at {3}{r}{r} and gaining Trample as well but I thought that might be a little much.... (or maybe need to be costed at {3}{r}{r}{r})

I can certainly get behind that flavour. Gaining trample on a sudden steal is indeed very good (So I took away a blocker, and attacked with it, AND you're gonna need to block it more than once?) on top of the kill. I dunno, I can see this needs to cost more than act of treason or, say, Fatal Attraction - but it does, so that's ok. Does it need to be bumped more? Add a small bonus and bump more? Dunno. It's inside the flaky zone of "Let's give it a try"

But this is a very good card. No bones about it.

change from Uncommon to Rare

Note that Grab the Reins does both halves of this, but it's pretty rare. I do like sideways ways for red to remove creatures other than burn, as long as they feel suitably red. I think this manages to do that.

(It's reminding me of Spinal Embrace, actually.)

Grab the reins does it at {5}{r}{r} - But I guess that has two further upsides (doing damage in return, and with the 'do only half' available for less)

But, um: "I like this! It's red, because it reminds me of a blue-black card!" is somewhat twisted logic for you, Alex.

This is exactly Slave of Bolas, except cheaper and not requiring black.

Huh, never saw that before. You're right. Cool.

I didn't say because :) I said "I like this", "This does feel red", and "It reminds me of a blue-black card". No "because" in there :)

I guess I could elaborate slightly that this is combining a red effect with an all-colours effect to get a combined effect that's technically blue-black. It's the question of Peculiar Ultimatum :) And Wizards themselves acknowledged the desirability of combining these effects with Catch // Release.

Changed text and CMC to match Slave of Bolas but slipped Trample in as well seeing as this is a Planeswalker's Signature Spell :)
It was either that or make it an Instant

removed trample as it made this too good.

A niggling aside: Grab the Reins doesn't untap the creature. Just one of those things people tend to miss on the card.

I also remember reins as being the second highest rated uncommon from Mirrodin, after Loxodon Warhammer. Pretty good for a card that effectively cost 7.
