I really liked the idea of searching for a card with a mana cost of {r}, but perhaps it should just say "red card with converted mana cost 1"? Also, this would be part of a horizontal cycle.

Probably only really prevents you seeking out a couple of {r/w} cards, so in my opinion, keep the terser wording.
