2012-09-13 07:03:52: jmgariepy created the card Set Back

I had a lot to say about this card, so I decided to put it all on my blog at JMGariepy.Wordpress.com. If you're interested in reading, and have been following what I've been doing, you may want to skim some of the article. A lot of that article talks about things I've already mentioned before in this set.

Too long, did read. For those who won't, the summary is: "Ok, fine. Resourceful is begging for a way to abuse it. Here you go. Have fun. (Also, this can help unabuse it because tokens don't go back to hand as cards)"

And yeah, I'm also surprised this never got printed before - but I guess Boomerang pre-empted most attempts at Unsummon variants.

I tried to give warning, but thanks for the follow-up warning. As I said, it isn't really for the Multiverse audience, I just had a few things to say about the subject of letting go good ideas to make better ideas.

I am curious to see what kind of reaction I get from the non-Multiverse crowd, though. We'll see.

Well, while I'm mixing realities - it HAS been pointed out to you that the "Free Parking" rule was an actual official rule in some editions of monopoly, right? Hence its pervasiveness. I think I agree with you on the effect it has, but as the only "Come back from behind" mechanic in the game, a lack you later chide the game for, it does potentially have a place; so I can see why they tried it.

Very sensible simple common. As you say, surprising it's never been printed.

I assumed it was just too much weaker than unsummon, given that artifact/enchantment destruction is usually more available than creature destruction.

But I'm very bad at judging the strength of bounce cards: obviously it's useful in an artifact-heavy environment, and there have been similar cards a while ago, so probably it's perfectly printable, there just hasn't been an environment which clearly needed it.

on Free Parking: I've looked at a fair number of classic rule books searching for the super secret game with that rule in it, and I haven't found it. Lack of evidence, however, isn't evidence. I'd be more than happy to update my article if anyone can tell me which edition called Free Parking a rule. As far as I can tell, however, it's never been one... just a really popular idea. It's the go-to example of what a house rule is.

On Unsummon: It's a surprisingly powerful card. We're very used to it, because it's been around for some time, but it's poked its head into some of the best decks out there. Mostly, its at its best when blue is matched with green, since those two colors working together just need a bit more time, and don't have proper creature removal.

I assume Set Back would play out the same way, except it would work best when matched in a Blue/Black deck. Those two colors can't do anything about powerful early artifacts or enchantments, but Set Back would buy Blue-Black enough time that an early Sword of Feast and Famine, say, didn't matter enough.

They'd normally prefer Disperse, but I could see this might get played in an artifact block.
