Very early design. The sword in question is from the Hawkmoon novels by Michael Moorcock.
Whenever it kills a creature, that creature is trapped in the sword until summoned to fight for the blade's wielder, then it moves on.
Yes in the books you need two other artifacts for the sword to work but.....artistic license and all.....
