Recent updates to Multiverse Design Challenge: (Generated at 2025-05-25 05:17:21)
(Ha, and over on the Space: the Convergence cardset, SadisticMystic already created Invertible Ring. I didn't realise that when I was making this.)
Created Misappropriation and Enter Cyberspace. Had a little discussion on the latter as to whether 57' is actually possible at all.
Created for Challenge # 057'.
I don't actually think there are any cards that could fit the terms of that challenge. Anything with a technological or sci-fi flavour could be rethemed into magical / fantasy terminology. (Many of Magic's more sci-fi or steampunk elements, such as many Mirran or Izzet cards, could have been given much more generically fantasy names. I'm glad they didn't.)
So I thought my best hope for this half of the challenge was to do a top-down design from some technological / sci-fi concept that doesn't have a magical equivalent. The card could of course be reflavoured to fantasy Magic and printed, but I think that'd be the case with anything.
Cyberspace was the best concept I could think of for a sci-fi idea without a magical equivalent. (Nanomachines were in second place.) I'd definitely admit that this rules text doesn't really scream "cyberspace"; if anyone has other ideas for mechanics that'd more clearly communicate cyberspace, I'd love to hear them.
Created for Challenge # 057. Random generator gave me Larceny, and I thought that'd work pretty well. Straight translation of terms, including the name and flavour text.
Oh, and I like Vitenka's suggestion that all Space: the Convergence cards should have colour indicator dots.
Awweesome.
ROFL. Yeah, I think the name is great :)
57a: The Enemy's Gate is Down
Man I lucked out. 57b to come.
For Challenge # 057 // Challenge # 057'. Originally, I figured I might spice things up by making a mashup instead of just a random card. First card that came at me was Zodiac Snake, which, you know... nothing exciting here... glad I was doing a mashup. Then I got Topsy Turvy.
Topsy Turvey? Oh hell, I just lucked out better than Vitenka did. Multiverse's Space the Convergence glossary doesn't have the parts of a turn yet, so I gave it what seemed relevant and logical. Since attacking was 'engaging' and sorceries were 'tactics', 'pre-engagement tactics' seems pretty appropriate. That, and over does double duty, being a synonym for 'end', but also being radio talk for 'your turn'.
I did take some liberties with 'player' and 'game' however, making them 'commander' and 'conflict'. There doesn't seem to be a real need to introduce those words, except for goofiness sake. That said, WotC has this weird balancing act with their own glossary. Your deck is your library. Your discard is your graveyard. You? Your a player... not a Planeswalker, or a wizard. This is a game... not a wizard's duel, or whatever. Kind of odd. It's like they go for the theme right up until the point where they feel people will sound like dorks when use correct terminology.
Oh, also, the name is a reference to Ender's Game, yes. Originally, I was going to use something that inferred that time was going backwards... but it doesn't does it? Time is going forward, everyone else it's everyone else in this conflict that's going backwards. Topsy-Turvy got it right. The reference point has changed. I tried names that dealt with Gravity Wells... but they sounded too grandiose and cataclysmic. I figured that maybe this reference to something that many who read scifi would know might work better.
Ha! Talk about lucking out... Celestial Dawn sounds like it was a StC card all along. The mechanic is certainly 'out there' as well...
Tweaked card: Defensive Position.
Original card: 17-X Advance Scout.
For Challenge # 057 // Challenge # 057'. Anything robot counts as foreign to Magic, I believe.
For Challenge # 057 // Challenge # 057'. The StC equivalent of Goblin Snowman, realigned with crystal (where it actually belongs, not with pyre).
For Challenge # 057 // Challenge # 057', randomly selected Celestial Dawn.
And wow did I get a nifty flavour for the first one!
I decided that "wild psi" and "dull psi" replace "any colour" and "colourless" respectively.
Also; space cards have colour dots. All of them.
LOL. Yeah, I just knew someone was going to see the card before the explanation and be puzzled. If I was assiduous I'd type the text in advance and then paste it in so there was less of a gap :)
I knew that was going to happen. For reference, there exists a cardset that began to explore Space. It has a nice glossary. Space: The Convergence
@Dude: Sorry, still typing details :) The intent is a functional reprint, but mild variations are also welcome.

Space: The Convergence is a fictional alternate history, where Magic: The Gathering had very similar mechanics, but was themed around space combat instead of wizard battles.
Several people have designed Space: The Convergence sets, but here there are two specific related challenges:
Challenge # 057a
Get a random magic card from: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?action=random
Write a Space: The Convergence version of it. If it's boring (eg. vanilla creature, or just has a keyword which already has a standard S:TC equivalent and you can't think of a good name for it), roll again.
I assume by default people will use existing keyword equivalents (eg. vigilance->stabilise, trample->overpower, etc), but feel free to make a different conversion than the "standard" if you think yours is interesting or better in some way.
The cards should usually be mechanically equivalent, but feel free to make small mechanical changes if it seems better (eg. changing creature types).
Challenge # 057b
Design a card for Space: The Convergence that for some reason wouldn't normally be printed in normal magic: eg. the flavour is gun-centric, there's a space-themed mechanic which has no obvious magic-themed equivalent, etc.
Is an "StC equivalent" a functional reprint with appropriate flavor and Oracle update, or is it a riff on an existing card?
