That's a good point. I think I'd rather cut the direct damage effect instead -- an 8/8 trample already does a good job of clocking an opponent, so the 5 damage feels more redundant than the 10 life.
Pretty neat, but I think five options on a card is a bit much. Maybe cut the life gain for simplicity?
Was initially going to be a functional reprint of Blightcaster save for creature type, but I decided to tweak it a little.
All of these ideas are super interesting. I think I like the fourth one the best, because the tap/untap aspect has cool interactions with the dormant mechanic and lets you choose whether to play aggressively or defensively depending on the board state. Thanks a ton!
Here are some thoughts
Other creatures you control with Flying have protection from creatures without Flying
Other creatures you control with Flying get +2/+0, have First Strike, and can't block creatures without flying
Other creatures you control with Flying have Lifelink. Whenever a creatuer with flying you control deals combat damage to a player, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card.
Whenever another creature with flying you control attacks, you may tap or untap target creature.
