Yes, that variant would be totally reasonable. It's supposed to be unclear, not balanced :)
For what it's worth, thinking from a strictly power level perspective, I think this card would be printable even if you cut the "lose X life" line. It doesn't seem that much more powerful than Stream of Life, when you think of it.
Yeah, this sortof approaches working for the ETB trigger (Polukranos, World Eater shows they're happy to tweak the rules to make this kind of ETB thing work if they consider it worth it), but there's no way the LTB trigger could happen :)
In fact, at first I thought you could use it if you could counter an activation. But you can't, can you? It triggers an infinite number of times before you even get priority, right?
Thought 1. It's normally impossible to design an ambiguous magic card, even if the interpretation according to the rules is bizarre, unexpected, or not defined, there's not two different valid readings. Is there any card text that WOULD be ambiguous?
Thought 2. This set is a good example of how it would be useful to have a one-sentence that was repeated on each card page somewhere (under the card, or under the cardset name) to head off people accidentally commenting on a card and not realising that set has different (or opposite!) design standards to normal :)
Probably per-cardset (although possibly having a selection for options like "working title", "not copyedited" etc might be nice in theory).
Y'all remember this set is FOR designs that don't work, right? There are several ways you could do it (even just "lose that much life" might work? Although is still a question if you SHOULD do it cf illusions of grandeur).
But if you did print this, what value would the second x take? 0? Anything you like? Something else? Or just not possible?
Gain X life until ~ leaves play?
Venarian Gold (with its current errata) shows the templating required for a version of the effect that actually works (or the other obvious way to make it work is by using counters, a la Quarantine Field or Endless Scream).
I don't think this does what it looks like, but I'm not sure. I can't remember what it does do.
Brushwagg was too obvious. =)
Heh. Careful though; you might make Wolverine tribal a thing :)
Two ways, really. The useful way, and the stupid way.
I think you're fine: I believe this won't be destroying much.
Hahaha, that took me longer than it should have :-)
Heh. Oh, 613.1d-f, why must you thwart us so?
Ha! Impressive. I completely skipped over the missing line, possibly due to taking it in as a variation on Ertai's Familiar. No, not Ertai's Familiar, Teferi's Imp.
LOL!
Still quite playable as a pseudo-Doomsday, clearing out your own library of everything but your combo of choice. You can't guarantee what order those cards will come up in, but I'm sure some decks would be built around combos that can learn not to care about such details.
:) This is one really quite overwhelmingly useless.
ROFL! Loving some of these.
I think on multiverse I'm too used to people designing incomplete cards and mentally filling in the gaps, or people designing narrow combo pieces, I thought "2/2 flying for 2 in blue, with an EXTREMELY NICHE bonus, probably intended for a phasing set" :)
Not sure if this works.
