Battalion Support. Also meant for flavorful (kinda) implementation of the Roman maniple.

> "Create a tapped 1/1 white Soldier creature token. It deals 2 damage to up to one target creature."

  • make the token deal the damage for max flavor
  • add "up to one" so that it can be cast even if there are no creatures on the battlefield

?

Also this is powerful (at common). Compare to Sparkmage Apprentice, Forge Devil, and Blisterstick Shaman. Along the lines of Fire Imp.

It definitely is a strong common, but needing a creature to be cast and entering tapped is a big enough drawback that I think it can exist without too much issue.

As for making the creature deal the damage, it is something I considered but I ultimately went with a simpler version.

If you make the burn effect uptional this might as well be a creature with flash and an ETB trigger.

The flavor on this one is kinda weak, so I'd take every bit of help to make this feel thematically right. Maybe increasing the cost for two tokens so the power matches up to the damage? Flavor text? etc.

I would say whether the design is flavorful or not might come down to opinion. IMO this feels pretty evocative in that it's a "special move" that the token performs by slamming themselves on the target (becoming tapped). Also, the token tells us that the move might a standard one in some kind of a white (boros?) militant faction. So I definitely don't see any issues with flavor though recently I, perhaps strangely, have found noncreature spells to be much easier to make flavorful compared to creature ones.

A bit of on-the-nose flavor text to better convey the flavor. The flavor behind the damage is like the flavor behind Massive Raid or Mugging - an attack on an unprepared enemy.
