I'm 97% sure this works. If you have four artifacts in play when you cast But a Man, it would lock the cost of the spell in as {8}. Then you could sacrifice those four artifacts to pay off the rest of the cost.

But that's not intuitive. And while I don't know if "most people would think" it worked one way or the other, I know you just couldn't print this.
